Brad Phillips, currently VP and general manager of CHUM Ltd.’s Citytv Vancouver, has been promoted to the newly created position of VP of CHUM Television BC. He will have overall corporate responsibility for both The New VI, based in Victoria, and Citytv Vancouver. A newly created position of station manager for The New VI, reporting to Phillips, will be announced shortly. As well, Howard Slutsken, currently VP and general manager of The New VI, will be leaving the company to form his own consulting firm. He will be an exclusive broadcast consultant to CHUM Television. The changes become effective on March 1. Daniel Cyr has resigned as a director of Look Communications Inc. Cyr, senior VP and CFO of Telesystem Ltd., has been a director of Look since May 2003. Telesystem sold all of its remaining common shares in Look to Unique Broadband Systems Inc. in December 2003. There are no plans to fill the vacancy on the board prior to Look’s next annual meeting. Sydney Suissa, a Canadian broadcast executive, has been named head of programming at National Geographic Channels International, which is based in Washington. He was most recently VP of documentary development at Toronto-based Barna-Alper Productions. Prior to that, he was senior VP of factual programming at Alliance Atlantis Communications Inc., the channel’s Canadian partner. Richard Cavanagh is leaving his position as VP of radio at the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB). After four years in the job, he’s setting up his own consulting practice in social, cultural and communications policy. His last day at the CAB will be February 27. Todd Rutherford, currently president of Cygnal Technologies Corporation’s White Radio division, will become president of the parent company’s service provider solutions group on March 29. He is taking over for Jim Taylor, who has resigned. The position at White Radio has not yet been filled. Jim Nelles, who was VP and GM at Rogers’ OMNI Television, resigned from his position at the end of last year. Pierre Comtois and Claude Garcia have joined the board of directors of Cogeco Inc. Comtois is president, managing director and chief investment officer at Optimum Asset Management Inc. Garcia is president of Canadian operations at Standard Life. Robert Odendaal took up his new position as president of Bell Canada’s newly created video group on February 1. Odendaal spent the past seven years as a senior executive at British Sky Broadcasting (Sky) in the United Kingdom. The Video Group, which includes Bell ExpressVu and the company’s video initiatives, will become part of Bell Canada’s consumer markets organization. CanWest Global Communications Corp. COO (corporate) Thomas Strike and COO (operations) Richard Camilleri were elected to the company’s board at its annual general meeting on January 29. Robert Templeton, president of NewCap Broadcasting, stepped down from Nova Scotia-based Newfoundland Capital Corporation Ltd., effective February 12. John Duffy, principal of StrategyCorp Inc., has registered federally as a lobbyist for Bell Globemedia. He will be lobbying on a number of fronts, including the Broadcasting Act, the Canadian Television Fund, and Telefilm Canada. At the Toronto International Film Festival, Maxine Bailey, formerly associate director of public affairs, is now director of public affairs, and Steve Gravestock, previously manager of festival programming, becomes associate director of Canadian special projects. Jessica Kamphorst is the new director of sponsorship and Elizabeth Muskala is now associate director of program administration. The late Israel Asper has been awarded the Manitoba Bar Association’s 2004 Distinguished Service Award. The award was accepted by his son David Asper on behalf of the Asper family at the Manitoba Bar Association Awards luncheon on January 30.
