Taylor Baiden, VP of finance at CHUM Ltd. as well as treasurer and secretary and board member, is leaving to "pursue other interests." He has been with CHUM since 1972. He has stepped down from his position on the CHUM board but will continue in his role as VP of finance until April 15. Kirsten Embree has joined Fraser Milner Casgrain’s Ottawa law office as a partner in its federal regulatory practice group. She has worked in both the telecommunications and broadcasting industries for almost 20 years, including as director of regulatory matters and legal counsel at AT&T Canada. She has also held positions at the former Department of Communications, Telesat Canada, and the Canadian Film Institute. She was most recently with Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP. Liberal MP Brent St. Denis has been elected chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology. He has served as Parliamentary secretary to the ministers of Natural Resources and Transport. Sarmite Bulte has been elected chair of the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage. She was the former Parliamentary assistant to previous Canadian Heritage minister Sheila Copps. Jeannot Castonguay was elected government vice-chair, and Gary Schellenberger as opposition vice-chair. Carolyn Stamegna and Hilary Goldstein have joined the entertainment law group of Goodmans LLP. Stamegna represents a wide variety of domestic and foreign financiers in addition to various Canadian production companies on matters ranging from property development and acquisition to production and distribution. Monika Jenson-Stevenson has been named head of programming at Stornoway Communications’ digital specialty TV channel i-channel. Jenson-Stevenson was a producer for 60 Minutes and also CTV Inc.’s W5. As well, CBC writer and broadcaster Laurie Brown joins the Stornoway team as host of two of i-channel’s new weekly series, Ideas with Laurie Brown and Issues on Film. Rahul Sharma has been hired as VP of Shaw Communications Inc.’s On-Demand Television Services. Eliot A. Phillipson has been appointed the fourth president and CEO of the Canada Foundation for Innovation. He succeeds David Strangway, who announced last August he would be stepping down on March 31. Phillipson currently serves as chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. He begins his new responsibilities on July 1. The Foundation’s senior VP Carmen Charette will serve as acting president during the interim period. Kristine Gilbert has become marketing manager for the Atlantic Region at Comweb Group Inc. and William F. White International Inc. (WFW). She has 30 years of experience working in Canada’s film and television production sector. Mark Maheu has been appointed as executive VP and COO of Newfoundland Capital Corporation Ltd., effective March 1. He has 24 years of experience in radio broadcasting. John Vos has joined Global News Calgary as managing editor, effective February 23. Prior to taking up his new position, he was news director at Calgary’s QR77 Radio since 1997. Brian Nixon has been appointed to the board of directors of Norsat International Inc., which designs and markets satellite products for high-speed data transmission. Currently CEO of B.C. Research Inc., Nixon has extensive experience in providing satellite communications services. Alain Gourd, executive VP of corporate at Bell Globemedia, has retired. He was in charge of BGM’s regulatory affairs based in Ottawa. He will continue on as a consultant to BGM. Ross Porter, VP of programming for CanWest Global Communications’ CoolFM and digital specialty TV channel CoolTV, was named Broadcaster of the Year during the 2004 National Jazz Awards ceremony on February 24 in Toronto. In Memory John Hirtle, the founding owner of CKBW radio in Bridgewater NS, died this month at age 89.
