Alain Gourd has retired as executive VP corporate for Bell Globemedia, after several years with various BCE Inc. properties. His duties will be assumed by senior VP corporate and public affairs Paul Sparkes, a former aide to ex-Prime Minister Jean Chrétien. Kirsten Embree has left Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP to become a partner in the Ottawa office of Fraser Milner Casgrain. She will work in the law firm’s federal regulatory practice group. At its recent convention in Montreal, the Canadian Independent Telephone Association elected its new board of directors. It is: president Hans Nilsson of Bruce Municipal Telephone System; VP Ian Stevens of Execulink; treasurer Don Holkestad of Prince Rupert City Tel; and directors Renée-Claude Boisvert of Sogetel; Robb Wagner of Hay Communications; Lisa Shackleton of Brook Municipal Tel; and William Grier of Lansdowne Rural Telephone. Peter Kibiuk is the new GM of Nokia Networks Broadband Systems Canada. Before joining Nokia a decade ago, he worked for several wireless companies. CENTRIA has named Christian Trudeau president/COO of its ecom division. Before joining the Montreal firm, Trudeau was president/COO of BCE Emergis. Robert Webster is the new CFO of Meriton Networks Inc. in Ottawa. He has experience at March Networks, Mitel Corp., and Trillium Telephone Systems Inc. VoIP services provider VoEx Inc. has appointed James Ball as senior VP strategic relationships. Most recently head of his own consulting firm, Ball has worked for MPower Communications, Level 3 Communications, and MFS Telecom. Brian Nixon has been elected to the board of directors of Norsat International Inc. The CEO of BC Research Inc. has experience at Infosat Communications Inc., BCE Media, and Vistar Communications Inc. Liberal MP Brent St. Denis has been elected as chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology. The Ontario politician served on the committee in the last session of Parliament. Eliot Phillipson is the new president/CEO of the Canada Foundation for Innovation. He replaces David Strangway, who is stepping down.David Johnston has been re-appointed president and vice-chancellor at the University of Waterloo. He chaired the National Broadband Task Force in 2001 (NL, June 18/01). The Earnscliffe Strategy Group’s André Albinati has been retained as a lobbyist by L3 Communications. He is also acting on behalf of Allstream Corp. (NL, Feb. 17/04). Charles Geiger of the Swiss ministry of foreign affairs has been named the new assistant executive director for the World Summit on the Information Society at the International Telecommunication Union. He replaces Pierre Gagné, who is now at the ITU’s development bureau of telecommunications.
