Joint venture provides wireless messaging serviceAlcatel and MetroPCS have formed an agreement to provide the Alcatel Multimedia Messaging Services (MMS) product suite, which will enable MetroPCS customers to access multimedia messaging via wireless devices. This will bring additional message capacity to service providers by integrating with existing messaging services. At the 3GSM World Congress in France, the Alcatel MMS platform set a new industry record with 150 MMS per second at a sustained rate. Cometa’s network open to iPassCometa Networks is opening up its network to iPass enterprise customers. As part of its exclusive Wi-Fi wholesale contract with Barnes & Noble, iPass’ iPassConnect services are accessible from any Cometa hotspot location, which include coffee houses, bookstores, office buildings and McDonald’s restaurants. This allows customers with a Wi-Fi-enabled laptop or PDA access to their corporate networks. PCTEL announces agreementPCTEL Inc. announced a licensing agreement to provide its private label version of the Segue Roaming Client software to T-Mobile USA Inc. for use with its T-Mobile HotSpot service. Customers who install this software on their notebook computer will be able to automatically detect, connect and log on at more than 4,200 T-Mobile hotspot locations across the United States. New program ensures one-network experienceBroadbeam Corporation has a new program, Uni-Fi Networking Initiative, which will ensure a one-networked experience for mobile personnel regardless of the number of Wi-Fi and 2G+ networks used. With the growing number of networks, the company says this can cause daunting challenges to personnel trying to utilize them all. Uni-Fi is based on Broadbeam’s MSS mobile framework, MSS IntelliSwitching, and enables mobile users to automatically connect and switch to available Wi-Fi and 2G+ networks. IEEE develops standardized test metrics, methods for Wi-FiThe Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has assembled a group of 802.11 vendors, independent testing facilities and regulatory agencies to help develop standardized test metrics and methods for Wi-Fi. Gerard Goubert, managing engineer of the University of New Hampshire’s Interoperability Labs and a Wireless Performance Prediction study group, said, "Standards-based methodologies are the first step to providing the same control in wireless environments that network managers have had for years in the LAN (Local Area Network)." Sweden wireless network goes nationwide for first timeSweden is the first country to offer nationwide third-generation cellular phone network (3G) coverage to its mobile users. When TeliaSonera Sweden opened its 3G network, users gained access to mobile Internet at broadband speed. The company’s mobile network covers 99% of the Swedish population, and its 3G network currently covers 75% of the population and 96% of the municipalities. In a survey conducted by Netsurvey for Telia in January 2004, 85% of 306 managers in various parts of Sweden said they expect to use 3G services within three years. Kyocera Wireless unveils new global branding strategyKyocera Wireless Corp., a CDMA handset manufacturer, has unveiled a new global branding strategy called "The Genius of Simplicity." This project is supported by a new design relationship with BMW Group DesignworksUSA, a design consultantcy located at the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA) trade show. The strategy is based on the notion that every ounce of organizational genius is directed to one goal - making the phone experience as simple as possible for the user, and will be used as the driving force behind all the company’s functional groups. The new brand will be available in the company’s global marketing communications and advertising material.
