Department lifts spectrum capIndustry Canada this afternoon announced that it will lift the spectrum cap that limits the amount of radio frequency that cellular phone companies can hold. A news release indicates the that the department will continue to monitor the wireless industry for spectrum concentration, and that it will continue to rely on the Competition Bureau and the CRTC to ensure a competitive telecommunications marketplace. The related Gazette notice indicates that: “In the near future, the wireless industry is going to have access to significantly more spectrum. The Department has proposed allocating and designating at least 100 MHz of new spectrum for the expansion and evolution of the cellular services such as advanced wireless services (AWS). As more spectrum becomes available, a spectrum cap policy to oversee spectrum concentration becomes less relevant.”The decision follows months of consultations that were concluded last March. Report on Wireless will have further details in a future issue.
