Day 14: Auction closes Industry Canada’s auction of unassigned 2300 MHz and 3500 MHz frequencies closed today with the department raking in nearly $56.6 million, an approximate five-fold increase from the auction haul of February 2004. After a total of 74 rounds over 14 days, the spectrum auction, which featured intense activity at times, came to an end on Thursday, January 27. This year’s bandwidth sale was much more exciting than February 2004’s auction of these frequencies in that there were more participants, resulting in greater rivalry for particular properties, and the value of the spectrum has increased considerably since last year. This was in part due to the continuing economic recovery of the telecom sector and ongoing development of broadband wireless technologies, namely WiMAX. The auction closed with Bell Canada at the top of the money list. It committed $34.5 million for 55 licences. Telus Mobility secured second place with the rights to 130 licences worth more than $8.8 million. Numbered company 4253311 Canada held the last medal position with $7.6 million committed to 25 licences, and Rogers Wireless locked up fourth place with 40 properties worth nearly $4.8 million. The table below shows all remaining 12 bidders by total number of standing high bids and the value of standing high bids.
