Critical Telecom has appointed Nancy McCartney as president and CEO. The announcement made on January 25 marks the beginning of a new focus for the company, which will be to scale Critical Telecom’s resources to meet expected global demand for its new generation of consumer broadband networks. McCartney brings more than 25 years experience in the telecommunications industry to the upstart. She has held senior positions with Ciena, Akara Corp. and Newbridge Networks. Prior to joining the company, McCartney was VP of supply chain management at Ciena where she was responsible for operations integration of Akara into Ciena. Most recently, she was VP of operations for Critical Telecom. Nortel Networks Corp. has welcomed back a familiar face. The company announced on January 27 that Peter Currie has returned to the telecommunications equipment maker as CFO, a position he held from 1994 until 1997. He is replacing William Kerr who has decided to step down. Kerr will remain with the company as a senior advisor to CEO Bill Owens, and will assist in the transition of Currie into his position. In other Nortel personnel news, Karen Sledge has agreed to assume the role of controller on a interim basis, taking over from MaryAnne Pahapill, who has accepted a financial position outside the company. Sledge has been with Nortel since 1985, held a number of financial positions since joining, and has been assistant controller since 2003. Former lobbyist Sarah Anson-Cartwright, has joined Bell Canada as director of government relations. She will be charged with lobbying the government on all matters regarding legislation that would affect telecommunications and broadcasting in Canada. Other matters will include competition rules, international trade and investment, telecom licensing and rates, and decisions made by the CRTC. Bob Cariglia has resigned from Minacs Worldwide Inc. as president and COO for personal reasons. His departure was effective January 24. The role of COO will be filled by Daniel Borris, who is currently VP of strategic implementations. Toronto-based Syndesis has made two major promotions to its executive ranks. On January 27, the company announced that Michael Bryce had been promoted to the position of VP of product development and Jag Siva was promoted to the VP of global services position. Bryce has a wealth of experience having previously worked as GM for Bell Nexxia Network Operations. Additionally, he was director of Internet infrastructure and applications services for Bell Global Solutions, and project manager at CGI. He will be charged with leading a team of more than 125 R&D professionals, driving the definition and production of the company’s software products. Siva will be responsible for ensuring customer and partner receive service delivery and support necessary to implement the company’s software. Prior to joining Syndesis, Siva worked at Bell Canada where he served in a variety of senior roles in advanced communications, Bell Nexxia and Bell Solutions. Telecommunications equipment manufacturer Circa Enterprises Inc. has announced the appointment of Graham Reid as VP finance and CFO. Effective Janaury 25, he brings a strong background in public companies and manufacturing. Prior to joining the company he was VP of finance for a remote power equipment maker in Calgary. Daniel Misiano has been appointed VP sales and business development at GlobeeCom International Inc. He will be responsible for all aspects of commercial exploitation, marketing and sales at both a national and international scale. Misiano has more than 20 years experience. BakBone Software Inc. has appointed Douglas Spencer as VP of research and development, and Fabrice Helliker to the newly created position of CTO. Both appointments are effective immediately. Spencer brings more than 23 years experience in the software industry to the table. Helliker, who has been with the company since it was created, will take on this new role and be responsible for driving BakBone’s product strategy.
