Michael Sabia has joined the board of directors of Clearwire Corp. following Bell Canada’s investment of $100 million in the American company. Clearwire is one of the only successful commercial providers of high-speed access using broadband wireless technology in the 2.5 GHz band. For more on the investment, see article on pages 4 and 5 of this issue. The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association’s board of directors has appointed new directors. Chuck Hartlen from Aliant Mobility; Stacey Sandison from SaskTel Mobility; and Tricia Waters from Nortel Networks Corp. were appointed to the board. Wireless Age Communications Inc. has acquired mmwave Technologies Inc. Former mmwave president Brad Poulos was appointed to the newly created position of president of Wireless Age Communications, reporting to CEO John Simmonds. Poulos’ brother Glenn left the company to him in 1998, where he served as president of mmwave. Simmonds said that with the acquisition of mmwave, “the company and its people are key building blocks in our strategy.” Cygnal Technologies Corp. has appointed Brad Arsenault as executive VP of operations for the company’s Cygnal Network Solutions division. In addition to being responsible for the company’s national operating policies and procedures, he will be in charge of the operations for the central region. Arsenault has more than 20 years of experience in the field, most recently serving as VP of technical operations at MCI Canada. Prior to that, he was an independent consultant, designing networks for some of the country’s leading corporations. Sierra Wireless Inc. has appointed Kent Thexton co-CEO of SEVEN Networks Inc., to its board of directors. Thexton has been with SEVEN since April 1994 when he joined the company in his current capacity. Prior to joining SEVEN, he was chief data and marketing officer at O2, a United Kingdom-based wireless operator. Sierra Wireless chair and CEO David Sutcliffe said Thexton’s extensive experience and background will be a great asset for the company going forward. Electrovaya Inc. has reduced the size of its board of directors and announced that two existing board members will not stand for reelection at its annual general meeting. Jim Jacobs, co-founder and CTO, and Pandit Patil will not stand for reelection at the company’s AGM to be held on March 29. Wi-LAN Inc. co-founder Hatim Zaghloul has resigned as chair of the board of directors. In recent years, he has moved from having direct operational responsibility for the Calgary company he helped founded in 1992 to being a member of board. Zaghloul has been replaced by Bill Hews, who has been a director of the company since 2000. He is also chair of the corporate governance committee. Hews also served as president of Wi-LAN from September 1999 to September 2001. He is currently president of Fideliter Inc., a private investment firm. C-Chip Technologies Corp. has announced the appointment of Martin d’Amours as the president and CEO of its Avensys subsidiary. D’Amours brings to the company 17 years of international experience in executive management, operations, sales, marketing, product management and development and engineering. He has worked for system providers and manufacturers. D’Amours spent the first 10 years of his career at Bell Canada where he eventually became GM of national accounts. MDSI Mobile Data Solutions Inc. has named Peter Roberts to its board of directors. Roberts is the former CFO and corporate secretary of Sierra Wireless Inc., a company he joined in January 1999. He was a member of the team that helped take the company public on the Toronto Stock Exchange in May 1999, followed by a co-listing on the NASDAQ exchange a year later.
