Daniel Gourd will retire as executive VP of Télévision de Radio-Canada when his contract ends in November 2005. He was promoted to executive VP nearly three years ago. The public broadcaster will begin an internal and external search for a replacement, using executive search consultants, Radio-Canada stated. Gourd will continue to manage Radio-Canada’s French Television services during the recruiting period, and will retain all his current responsibilities, including the 2005-06 program schedule and corresponding budget. He has worked for Radio-Canada for 26 years. Walter Levitt has left Alliance Atlantis Communications and will join CanWest MediaWorks as senior VP of marketing on July 5. He will oversee branding, advertising, public relations and on-air promotions for Global’s television network, eight specialty TV channels and two radio stations. As well, Zev Shalev has been appointed as senior executive producer in charge of entertainment and information program development at CanWest. Douglas Barrett returns as chair of the Canadian Television Fund (CTF), it was announced at the Banff World Television Festival. Paul Gratton (CHUM Television) and Michael Hennessy (Canadian Cable Telecommunications Association) will serve as VPs; Claire Samson (Association des producteurs de films et de télévision du Québec) is treasurer and Kevin DeWalt (Minds Eye Entertainment) is a member-at-large. New board members include Jean-Pierre Blais (Canadian Heritage), Scott Garvie (Shaftesbury Films Inc.), Pierre Lampron (Quebecor Media), Bruce Ryan (Drilcorp Energy Ltd.) and Barbara Williams (CanWest MediaWorks Inc.). Outgoing members include Judith Brosseau (Les chaînes Télé Astral), Michel Carter (TQS), Ira Levy (Breakthrough Films and Television) and Susan Peterson (Canadian Heritage). Jennifer McAuley has been named as VP of production at AJE Productions Inc. She will develop and produce a new roster of lifestyle series and documentaries for Toronto-based AJE and create a new children’s department within the company. Jonathan Dube will join CBC.ca as editorial director in late July. He is currently managing producer of MSNBC.com in Seattle, a columnist for the Poynter Institute in Florida, a board member of the Online News Association, and founder and publisher of CyberJournalist.net. The editorial director position is new. As well, Mark Hyland, director of broadband and digital services at CBC English Television, has left the public broadcaster to join QuickPlay Media. Deborah Beatty, VP of interactive at Corus Entertainment’s Radio Interactive Group, will take on the newly created role of general manager of Corus Radio Interactive this September. As well, Jeff Woods has been appointed as programming and content director at Corus Radio Interactive. Beatty will be responsible for overall operations and strategy of interactive programming, sales and operations for all Corus Radio stations. Woods, who will report to Beatty, will work with general managers and program directors across the radio division to develop and implement content that complements the local station and extends the relationship with audiences into new media. Woods begins his new position on July 4. Michael Newman, former head of Bell ExpressVu and Bell Mobility, has been named as president and COO of EchoStar Communications. As president of Bell ExpressVu, Newman dealt with EchoStar as both satellite TV distributors used the same hardware. Newman left Bell Mobility earlier this year. In a media release, Newman indicated that he looked forward to advancing EchoStar’s push into some dynamic new products and services. The former British High commissioner to Canada Andrew Burns has been appointed to the board of the British Broadcasting Corp. as international governor. He replaces Pauline Neville-Jones. Lesley Grant has been appointed as head of drama development at Barna-Alpher. Most recently, Grant was senior executive of development and production at CTV.
