Telecommunications and cable industry veteran Louis Brunel has been appointed to the National Research Council Canada’s governing council for a three-year term. He spent 11 years as a senior executive at Vidéotron ltée, and is president and CEO of the International Institute of Telecommunications. Astral Television Networks senior VP of marketing and sales Domenic Vivolo has been elected president of the Cable Telecommunications Association for Marketing of Canada (CTAM Canada). A&E Television Networks VP for Canada Shelley Blaine-Goodman is VP, Cogeco Cable director of affiliate relations Jean-Pierre Caveen is secretary, and Alliance Atlantis Broadcasting VP of affiliate marketing Chris Fuoco is treasurer. The organization’s 2006 board members are: Harris Boyd, Hawley Chester, Mike Lee, Greg O’Brien, Luc Perrault, Grenville Pinto, Ruby Tan, Bil Trainor and Mark Waschulzik. As well, the chairs of the CTAM committees are: Boyd (membership committee), Lee (sponsorship committee), O’Brien (communications committee), Pinto (program/events committee), Tan (nominating committee) and Waschulzik (marketing committee). Marie-Pierre Coles is now the director of programming at Seville Pictures. Al Pervin has been appointed as general manager of The Jewel 98.5 FM, the new Evanov Radio Group station in Ottawa that is expected to launch in January 2006. Previously, he provided management consulting and sales training to radio stations across the country for the past 13 years, and was general manager of CHUM’s radio stations in Windsor/Detroit. Lesley Hunter, manager of distributor relations at Leafs TV and Raptors NBA TV, is taking a year’s leave. In her absence, Aaron LaFontaine, director of broadcast and distributor relations, will take over business and contract matters. All marketing and promotional matters will be handled by marketing coordinator Mary Beth Challoner. Former Ottawa Renegades director of media and communications Arash Madani has been hired by the A-Channel Ottawa as a sports anchor. He worked for the Renegades for the past two years, and also hosted Renegades Vibe on the local Rogers Television station. Affiliate account executive Jeremy McCarthy left Alliance Atlantis on November 11. He joined the company in 2003 from Bell ExpressVu. Terry Nickerson has been appointed as a member of the board of digital broadcast gear manufacturer Miranda Technologies. Michael Washinushi has been hired as the CFO at XM Canada, also known as Canadian Satellite Radio. He will have overall responsibility for financial reporting and corporate governance. He joined the XM Canada in spring 2005. As well, Stewart Lyons, who has worked with the company since its inception and recently joined the company full-time from Scotia Capital, becomes executive VP. Colin Bettam becomes the company’s senior VP of marketing and sales. He was most recently VP of marketing at Coors Canada, and is a former director of marketing at AT&T Canada. As well, Ross Davies has been hired as VP of programming. He has more than 30 years of broadcasting experience, including 20 years at CHUM, most recently VP of programming in the radio division. Melissa Clark, who has worked as director of national retail sales for Rogers Wireless, joins as VP of retail sales and distribution, and industry veteran Paul Williams as VP of network sales. André Di Cesare takes on the position of director of French-language talent and industry relations. He has more than 25 years’ experience in the Quebec entertainment and music industry, including co-founding the independent record label Star Musik inc. Christine Shipton has been named as VP of original programming at CanWest Media Works. She will oversee all original fiction and non-fiction programming. She joined Global five months ago as director of dramatic programming (CCR, June 8/05). Jamie Schouela has been hired as director of advertising and promotions strategy for Global TV. Previously, he was director of marketing at Alliance Atlantis. As well, Tim Kist has joined as director of marketing for specialty TV. He joins Global from APTN, where he was director of sales and marketing. Brad Parry, who was most recently director of marketing, advertising and DM for Adculture Group, becomes director of marketing for CH TV. Kist will be based in Winnipeg and Parry in Calgary. Derek Mazur has been named as executive producer of the National Film Board’s Prairie Centre. He will be based in Winnipeg, where he has worked for more than 30 years as a producer, director and writer. Valerie Creighton has been named as president of the Canadian Television Fund. Her term begins in January 2006. She is currently CEO of SaskFilm and film commissioner of the province of Saskatchewan.
