Canadian author reveals novel through Facebook

Brief | September 4, 2007

For the past several weeks Canadian author Michael Winter has been posting a short synopsis of each chapter of his latest novel The Architects Are Here every few days on his Facebook page, and will continue posting until the book is published later this week. While The Globe and Mail suggests he's serializing the novel, Winter isn't actually publishing complete chapters, instead augmenting the Facebook synopses with thoughts and commentary about developing that particular chapter. Not surprisingly, other writers have turned to the social networking site to drum up support of their latest works as well. Halifax novelist Dr. Brad Kelln, who has published two thrillers, has been posting chapters of his new book on the social networking site as he writes them. The practice, however, seems more to the benefit of the readers than the authors; Winter counts about 230 members in his Facebook group. While it's hardly enough to rocket the novel to the top of bestseller lists, it does extend the reach of the social networking phenomenon beyond catching up with old friends.
