CEP, other unions set to rally CanWest/Alliance transaction hearings

Brief | November 16, 2007

The Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada has organized a demonstration for Monday, November 19 at 8:15 a.m., outside of the Gatineau building where the CRTC will hold hearings into CanWest MediaWorks' purchase of Alliance Atlantis. Along with the CEP, ACTRA, CWA-Canada and CUPE will be calling on the CRTC to respect its mandate and regulate in the interests of Canadians. The unions say that by linking arms with a giant American investment house, CanWest is bringing foreign ownership of our media in through the back door. "The media giant has already been gutting newsrooms across the country resulting in loss of jobs, loss of local programming, loss of Canadian culture and identity," said the CEP in an news release. Monday's hearings will be taking place at Place du Portage IV, 140 Prom. du Portage, in Gatineau.
