Canadian new media companies on Red Herring’s top 50 list

More than a dozen new media companies have been short-listed for the top 50 Canadian companies compiled by Red Herring, an influential California-based weekly business and technology magazine. The top 50 winners will be announced at an event taking place from September 15 to 17 in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec.This is the first time that the magazine has compiled such a list for Canadian companies. The move follows the success of annual listings for North America, Europe and other parts of the world. For instance, the magazine compiles North America 100, Europe 100, and Global 100, which profiles top companies in these locations. In a statement on its website, Red Herring says nominees on Canada Top 50 were selected after a rigid evaluation of criteria on technological innovation, financial performance, quality management, and strategy execution.“This unique assessment of potential is measured by a review of the actual track record and standing of a company, allowing Red Herring to see past the "buzz" and make the list an invaluable instrument for discovering and advocating the greatest business opportunities in the industry,” said the statement.One of the companies on the list is Mississauga-based A Couple of Chicks, an outfit that helps clients with online searches, online marketing, and measurement. CEO Carole Leaman says one of the key things that mark out her company is the fact that it helps clients filter and rank RSS feeds. Being on the top 50 list will create market awareness about the company.“It will help us continue the momentum on raising market awareness,” says Leaman.Ottawa-based Devshop, a company dealing in software projects, is also one of the short-listed companies. Founded in 2004, the company caters to small and medium sized software companies, by helping them with management issues, and scheduling time. Founder and CEO Craig Fitzpatrick says being listed on Canada Top 50 will enhance expansion possibilities for the company.“We are very excited to be on the list,” says Laurence Esterhuizen, director of business development with Casebank Technologies Inc., another Mississauga-based company on the list. Casebank, provides diagnostic guidance software solutions for systems, equipment and processes. Its clients are from the aerospace and automotive industries, including the military. Established ten years ago, the company has been developing and in the last few years raked in significant profits, says Esterhuizen, adding that the listing will further help consolidate the company’s position in the market.The companies profiled can be accessed here.
