As of April 20, Telefilm Canada will have a new director in charge of national and international business development in the person of Sheila de la Varende, whose appointment was made public on April 7. Wayne Clarkson, Telefilm’s executive director describes de la Varende’s duties as helping to develop national and international strategies for Telefilm. Not new to Telefilm Canada, de la Varende has experience in the film and digital media sector. She has previously been director of Telefilm’s European office as well as director of international promotion and development division. She has also worked as director of the Festival du nouveau cinema du Montreal; and executive director of Digimart, an organization that promotes a market for digital cinema. Elsewhere, de la Varende was project manager, digital strategy, and deployment at the National Film Board. In response to her appointment, de la Varende says she’s thrilled at being chosen to contribute to Telefilm’s strategic goals. She replaces Danny Chalifour, who held the position on an interim basis after Telefilm implemented a new operations structure in October 2008. Chalifour will be retiring in June this year, according to a press release from Telefilm.
