Astral Media is automating its video-on-demand content delivery infrastructure – a move it hopes will save money and open new revenue streams. Until recently, Astral loaded content onto hard disks which were couriered to the various cablecos and other distributors across the country. The content was then manually transferred into the VOD systems. It has recently installed a new content distribution management system from Signiant, Inc. in Amsterdam, which allows VOD content to be delivered over a secure ftp. “In addition, by going the secure ftp route we are poised to enable new revenue streams by sending content to emerging IPTV, Mobile and Over-The-Top services by tailoring the content to meet individual format requirements. These opportunities were not economically attractive with the manual processes,” said Chris Bell, Astral’s VP technology. The new system is currently supplying five cablecos with digital content, with automated ingest directly into the VOD server systems. Several more affiliates will be added within the next couple of months. Astral is the primary supplier of VOD content to Canada’s major cablecos.
