Sirius Canada announced Thursday that, effective March 1, 2010, a Canadian music royalty fee of six per cent will be added to its radio subscriptions, Digital Home reports. The new fee means an additional 90 cents will be tacked onto a customer’s $14.99 monthly bill. “The Copyright Board of Canada has recently reached a decision regarding the cost to broadcast copyrighted music through your SIRIUS Satellite Radio(s). As a result of this decision, a Canadian Music Royalty Fee of 6% will be introduced to all SIRIUS subscriptions effective March 1, 2010,” said a Sirius notice sent to subscribers posted on the Digital Home website. The royalty will be distributed to Canadian copyright owners through copyright collectives such as the Society of Composers, Authors, and Music Publishers of Canada. Digital Home reported that Sirius has more than one million subscribers and the total royalties collected could amount to more than $10 million per year.
