The CRTC announced Thursday that it will hold hearings in October to review access to basic telecommunications services and other matters. According to the CRTC’s notice of consultation, the hearings are expected to last about two weeks, beginning Oct. 25, 2010. The hearings are part of the CRTC’s review of the basic service objectives of small and large incumbent local exchange carriers, i.e., local phone companies. The commission plans to address issues associated with access to basic telecommunications service; how that service is subsidized; the objective of basic service; and local competition. The commission will also review a separate issue on the forbearance framework related to wireless data services.
