Lynx Mobility launched its cellular phone service Monday in Kuujjuaq, Nunavik, the first wireless mobile service to be offered in the northern Quebec region. The service will be administered by Nunacell, owned by Makivik Corporation. Nunacell will offer prepaid local and long distance phone calls, text messaging and roaming. The service covers a 20-kilometre range around Kuujjuaq, which has a population of 2,500. Nunacell says it plans to expand service to other communities in Nunavik. Makivik is a not-for-profit corporation that manages the funds of the Nunavik Inuit. Lynx Mobility is a subsidiary of OmniGlobe.
