Bell Aliant released Monday a list of New Brunswick communities be included in the company’s fibre to-the-home (FTTH) network expansion. The cities to receive coverage include Bathurst, Miramichi, Saint John and Moncton. By year-end, Bell will have spent $80 million connecting 110,000 homes and companies in New Brunswick to its FibreOP network, representing 35 per cent of the province’s consumers. On Feb. 3, Bell Aliant announced plans to double its spending on fibre technology to expand its network. FTTH provides high speed Internet and HDTV coverage, but comes at a higher cost for consumers. Analysts say Bell Aliant need to expand its fibre network to keep remain competitive against other cable companies operating in the region. In September 2009, Bell Aliant announced full coverage for Frederiction, NB, with FTTH technology.
