The City of Edmonton will give out $50,000 in prizes to iPhone developers who create the best applications for sharing municipal information with the public. Prizewinners will showcase their applications in October at the Government Technology Exhibition and Conference 2010 in Ottawa, a release said Tuesday. The city also plans to launch its own iPhone application called CityWatch. The application lets citizens report information about municipal services to Edmonton’s municipal services 311 call centre. “The city is committed to supporting our local software development community—some of the most innovative companies in the world are based in Edmonton,” Chris Moore, the City of Edmonton’s chief information officer, said in a release.
