Shaw Communications Inc. announced Wednesday that it has entered into an agreement with Telesat Canada to acquire capacity from a new satellite expected to launch at the end of 2012. The satellite is expected to improve Shaw Direct’s satellite television services with a 30 per cent increase to 16 new transponders. "Acquiring this capacity will increase our ability to deliver the best satellite television service in Canada—and is part of our commitment to providing our customers with exceptional experiences," Peter Bissonnette, president of Shaw, said in a release. Shaw’s satellite service currently reaches more than 900,000 customers across Canada. The new satellite will also increase Shaw’s bandwidth and give customers more programming choices, including more high definition channels, the release said.
