CANARIE issues calls for applications to expand high speed network

Canada's Advanced Research and Innovation Network (CANARIE) announced Monday a request for proposals to expand its network access. CANARIE said in a release that $2 million is available. It said research and educational organizations from private sector, federal or provincial government departments, agencies, laboratories or educational, arts and cultural institutions are eligible to submit applications demonstrating how a connection to the organization’s high speed network would enhance their research, innovation or education activities. CANARIE’s infrastructure extension program currently extends to Health Canada, the National Research Council Canada (NRC), Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, the Museum of Nature, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Banff Centre, Brandon University, Natural Resources Canada, the Canadian Film Centre, and others. The research network is inviting new partners to apply to join the network under the program. "This is an opportunity to further connect the Canadian innovation ecosystem,” Jim Roche, president and CEO of CANARIE, said in a release. "Extending the reach of the CANARIE high speed network and connecting institutions, academic researchers, R&D labs at companies and government departments as well as the creative artistic communities allows them to explore new research and innovation opportunities, address multi-disciplinary and multi-sectoral challenges, and accelerate the outcome of research activities." Interested parties can apply by Aug. 13, 2010. CANARIE manages an ultra high-speed network hundreds of times faster than the Internet, to facilitate research and science. More than 39,000 university researchers connect to the network, as well as researchers at institutes, hospitals, and government laboratories.
