Moore, Clement consult with ‘tweeps’ about copyright

Heritage Minister James Moore and Industry Minister Tony Clement have been consulting with the public on Twitter about their new copyright bill. Under the Twitter discussion tag #C32—named after the government’s new copyright Bill C-32—Clement and Moore have been receiving and responding to comments about the legislation from their followers, or “tweeps” in Twitter parlance. “Tweeps thanks for the flow of comments & questions. Since I cannot reply individually 24/7 I encourage visiting copyright.gc.ca,” Clement tweeted this week. The ministers have also been re-tweeting feedback they’ve received. On Friday Moore re-tweeted a note from user “Entriech,” who wrote, “I may not agree w C-32 in its entirety, but good on you for rejecting 3 strikes.” That’s a reference to a controversial proposal to restrict or disable Internet access after three alleged digital copyright infringements online. Moore has rejected the idea, saying Internet access is an important public service. “Thank you. We think this is the right balance,” Moore responded. Clement re-tweeted a note Friday from Twitter user “maurymarkowitz,” who wrote, “ like the bill, mostly. But locks should be legally removable when work enters public domain.” But not all comments are so tasteful. “THATS A STUPID BILL. YOU GUYS FAILED 2 YEARS AGO, WHY TRY AGAIN?” wrote another Twitter user, "AsianPinoY," in reference to the Conservatives’ Bill-C-61, which died on the order paper in 2008 due to an election. “Please don’t yell,” Clement responded. Clement told QMI Agency on Thursday that the Twitter consultations weren’t planned. “I was getting a lot of feedback and I started to respond, mostly to answer questions,” he said. The Conservative government intends to send to legislation to a special legislative committee, which will have the power to make significant amendments to the majority agreement of the House parties.
