OmniGlobe rolls out broadband in Manitoulin Island

OmniGlobe Networks Inc. announced Tuesday that it is delivering essential broadband services to residents and businesses Manitoulin Island, Ont. The underserved area is being connected as part of the Manitoulin Wireless Broadband initiative in partnership with Blue Sky Economic Growth Corporation, local municipalities, and funding from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund, FedNor and OmniGlobe. The project aims to improve infrastructure and services and connect more than 80 per cent of the district of Manitoulin Island. OmniGlobe, which has previously deployed fixed wireless networks in the province, has completed a nine-tower build in the Manitoulin region, extending broadband coverage from Meldrum Bay to Wikwemikong, a release said. Communities around Barrie Island, Evansville, Gore Bay, Kagawong, Manitowaning, Meldrum Bay, Sheguiandah, Sheshegwaning, Silver Water and Wikwemikong are now connected for high-speed Internet and voice over IP (VoIP) services. OmniGlobe said Birch Island and White Fish River are expected to be connected to the network over the next few months. "We believe that every Canadian should have access to broadband Internet services, and we are extremely pleased to be part of this initiative," Nigel Maund, chief business development officer of OmniGlobe, said in a release. “Access to better broadband technology will enable small businesses to flourish economically and will allow the permanent and seasonal resident population and tourists alike to remain connected, no matter where they are." The broadband network allows for "open access,” the company said, enabling local Internet service providers to offer service and residents a choice of multiple providers, including OmniGlobe Broadband, OmniGlobe's broadband division, Vianet Internet Solutions and MSD Computer Corporation, the release said.
