Shaw Communications Inc. plans to invest $100 million in its wireless business plan before the end of the fiscal year, the company’s said Wednesday in its third quarter results. The company invested $9 million in the project in the last quarter. "As we look to the final quarter of fiscal 2010 we will remain focused on building a business that leverages our core competencies in this evolving entertainment, broadcasting and communication industry and continues to add shareholder value," Jim Shaw, Shaw CEO and vice chair, said in a release. The company gained 87,092 new digital cable subscribers in the quarter to 1,595,619 subscribers. Basic cable subscribers were up 2,322 customers, and direct-to-home customers increased by 1,856. Digital phone subscribers grew from 1,796,973 to 1,044,410, bringing the total number of digital phone lines to over 1 million. Internet customers grew by 25,661 to 1,796,973 subscribers, while Shaw Direct added 1,856 customers. During the quarter Shaw Direct entered into agreements with Telesat to acquire capacity on a new satellite expected to be ready for use in late 2012. The satellite will provide extra bandwidth for new HD and advanced services.
