Videotron launching 120 Mbps Internet service

Videotron announced Tuesday that it is launching 120 Mbps download Internet service in Quebec City—what the company calls “the fastest speeds in Canada.” Effective Wednesday, Videotron’s Ultimate Speed Internet 120TM will be available for $150 per month, offering a download speed of 120 Mbps and an upload of 20 Mbps. The service comes with a monthly download cap of 170 GB and an upload limit of 30 GB. “Today, we are launching the high-speed Internet service of the future. With the pace at which users’ needs are changing, we are not so far from the day when 120 mbps will be a must-have convenience,” Robert Dépatie, president and CEO of Videotron, said in a release. The company said that the new service will be available Wednesday in nearly 80 per cent of the greater Québec City area, reaching nearly 310,000 households and businesses. Videotron, a subsidiary of Quebecor Media, plans to make the service accessible to the entire Québec City area by the end of the year, gradually rolling it out in other Videotron service areas. Videtron also offers 50 Mbps Internet with a 125 GB combined upload download cap for $82, a 30 Mbps service with a 100 GB combined limit for $66, and a 15 Mbps service with a 60 GB combined cap for $55. The company said that at 120 Mbps, a 700 MB film can be download in less than a minute and a 50 MB file in 20 seconds. “It is increasingly common for families, self-employed workers and small businesses to share a single Internet connection among a number of people and among many simultaneous uses and applications: uploads and downloads, video and photo sharing, computers and game consoles,” the Videotron release said. “For them, the ability to upload videos, music and images at speeds of up to 20 mbps will be a highly welcome advantage of Ultimate Speed Internet 120.” The company is also offering business rates with higher monthly download caps.
