The move to digital media has forced Transcontinental Inc. to close a Quebec printing plant, resulting in 182 job losses, the Canadian Press reported this week. A company spokesman told CP new media, the Internet and new communications platforms resulted in a decrease in demand for print material. But the company said its printing operations are also more efficient due to new high-tech printing equipment, and the plant closure shouldn’t be interpreted as the end of print’s popularity. The company has 35 printing plants in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico, and operates 150 websites. The Boucherville, Que. plant that closed printed magazines, books and catalogues.
