The CRTC announced on Dec. 23 it has revised its telecommunications costs award practices and procedures to include a new cost allocation methodology. In September 2009, the commission received an application by Barrett Xplore Inc., Bell Aliant, Bell Canada, Cogeco Cable Inc., Northwestel Inc., Rogers Communications Inc., SaskTel, Shaw Communications Inc., Télébec and Telus Corp. requesting that the commission review its costs award practices. Section 56 of the Telecommunications Act authorizes the commission to award costs to parties associated with telecommunications proceedings. The revised guidelines clarify that the commission is open to eligibility requests. On Dec. 23, the commission also awarded the Canadian Association of the Deaf, the Union des consommateurs and the Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic (CIPPIC) $7,764.75, $10,400 and $4,740.75, respectively, for participating in its proceeding revising the costs awards infrastructure.
