The CRTC launched a review Tuesday of regulatory measures associated with the provision of service maps by telephone service providers. Competitive carriers are required to provide the commission with service maps of their coverage areas. The maps are primarily used to determine small carriers' serving areas to determine interconnection issues. But carriers have taken issue with the purpose of the maps and the obligation to provide them. The commission is reviewing the appropriateness of requiring service maps as well as whether there should be regular deadlines and charges associated with providing them.
