Emergency Managment Ontario can now issue red alerts for emergencies over TV airwaves in the province, Pelmorex Communications Inc. and CHCH announced Thursday. CHCH, a local television station broadcasting in Hamilton and Toronto, and Pelmorex, owner of The Weather Network and Météo Média, said CHCH is the first over-the-air TV broadcaster to participate in the alerting program, and that the station has broadcast demonstration messages issued by the province. The Province of Ontario is using Pelmorex’s national alert system to distribute emergency red alerts to broadcasters in the province. The alerts are also available to radio stations, cable companies, newsrooms, and websites. Broadcasters retain control over the content and timing of when the alert is broadcast, a release said. Red alerts air when an urgent emergency threatens life, safety and property in the immediate area of the province. The alerts are validated by either the municipality or the provincial ministry, and Emergency Management Ontario, the release said.
