Asian Television Network International Ltd. (ATN) has requested that the CRTC approve six new foreign channels for distribution in Canada. ATN said in its applications that the new channels will be wholly dedicated to South Asian and Indian content. The company said the Suvarna Channel will provide a unique broadcasting service, offering 24-hour year-round programming for viewers interested in Kannada-language, general entertainment programming from India. The company has also asked the commission to approve Asianet and Asianet Plus, which will provide 24-hour, year-round, Malayalam-language general entertainment programming, and Asianet News, a Malayalam-language news channel. Other channel applications include NDTV Profit, which provides business and financial information programming, and NDTV India, a daily news content channel. ATN said in its applications that there are no plans to include French- or English-language subtitles on the new channels. The deadlines for comments on the applications are May 30 or June 6, depending on when they were filed.
