Shaw Communications Inc. is launching its own over-the-top subscription movie service that will compete with Netflix Inc. The Shaw Movie Club, announced Friday, will offer unlimited access to hundreds of movies for $12 per month. An option to upgrade to HD for an extra $5 will become available later this summer, the company said. Netflix’s streaming service costs $8 per month. The Shaw Movie Club will offer “newer movie titles that are updated monthly,” the company said in a release. It can be accessed online, through a set-top box in Calgary and Edmonton, or through iPhone and Android apps. Watching video-on-demand movies through the set-top box won’t contribute to Internet data caps, the company said.
