Rogers Communications Inc. has applied to incorporate a bank into the company under the federal Bank Act. “The bank will carry on business in Canada under the name of Rogers Bank in English and Banque Rogers in French, and its head office will be located in Toronto, Ontario,” an application notice, published in the Canada Gazette on Saturday, said. The company says the move is intended to clear the way to offer retail credit cards. Credit cards would give the company an opportunity to market its brand and offer customers loyalty and rewards points for products and services. An unnamed spokesperson for Telus Corp. told The Globe and Mail Tuesday that the telco does not intend to apply for a banking licence. “It’s not our core competency,” the spokesperson said.
