The CRTC announced Monday that it has approved two applications from Bhupinder Bola for licences to operate Chinese Cantonese and Chinese Mandarin TV services. The specialty channels will cater to Cantonese-language and Mandarin-language communities in Canada. The CRTC said it received an intervention from Fairchild Television Ltd. for the applications. Fairchild, the owner of the Fairchild Television and Talentvision channels, told the commission that its stations broadcast most of their programming in Cantonese or Mandarin. The CRTC said it approved the applications and is requiring the TV channels to broadcast 90 per cent of their programming in their assigned languages. Ten per cent of programming can be broadcast in one or both official languages, the CRTC said.
