The CRTC said Friday it has approved an application from Golden West Broadcasting Ltd. to expand the parameters of its CFEQ-FM Winnipeg, Man. radio station In a release, the commission said Golden West requested to increase the English-language specialty radio station’s effective radiated power from 920 to 100,000 watts as well as change its antenna height from 92.1 to 223 metres. The commission said Golden submitted that the changes would not affect CFEQ-FM Winnipeg’s frequency and specialty format. An application supporting Golden’s changes and several interventions opposing them were received, the CRTC said. “These individuals stated that approval of the proposed technical changes would put CFEQ-FM in competition with other commercial broadcasters, and questioned whether the licensee has provided sufficient proof that the station is not adequately serving the Winnipeg market with its existing technical parameters,” the commission said. But the CRTC added that in light of evidence submitted by Golden, the station is not adequately serving Winnipeg with its existing parameters.
