Twenty-seven applicants have come forward to compete for an FM frequency licence in Toronto’s radio market. The CRTC’s call for applications, which closed Dec. 19, 2011, was met with requests from CBC/Radio-Canada, Astral Media Inc. and Dufferin Communications Inc. among several others. The commission issued the call for applications on Sept. 28, 2011 after receiving a submission from Dufferin seeking to change the broadcasting frequency of its CIRR-FM, or 103.9 Proud-FM, station. Dufferin sought to move its current 103.9 MHz frequency to an available 88.1 MHz slot. In response to the application, the CRTC opened a call for further applications to compete for the spectrum. The submitted applications have not yet been made public by the commission.
