The federal Conservative government will announce the rules for the upcoming 700 MHz spectrum auction this month, Bloomberg reported Wednesday. That announcement could come as early as Feb. 13, Bloomberg said, citing an unnamed source familiar with the plans. Wireless carriers and other industry insiders have awaited the government’s announcement of the rules for the auction, which will see each of the carriers bid on the spectrum designated for mobile use. Industry Canada has said it expects the industry to need at least eight months lead-time to prepare for the auction and that it will conduct a final consultation on the rules after they are released. Bruce Kirby, Public Mobile’s vice-president of strategy and business development, said last month that the department should release the rules by the end of February if it still intends to hold the auction this year.
