Chinese state broadcaster applies for distribution

CCTV News, part of China's largest broadcasting network, has applied to the CRTC to add its English and French feeds to the list of foreign TV services eligible for distribution in Canada. CCTV News is owned by China Central Television (CCTV), China's state broadcaster and the country's largest broadcasting network. The Canadian Chinese Media Network sponsored the application, posted on the CRTC's website April 24. CCTV News focuses on events in Asia and China, according to a brochure filed with the commission. News coverage would also include business, finance, economics, culture and sports events. "It provides international audiences with a window into understanding China and the world at large," the brochure said. In February, CCTV News launched CCTV News America with the goal of covering an "underrepresented" region of the world with alternative views, the brochure said. "Wow TV considers that this service would find an audience among Chinese and Canadian television subscribers," Chuck Yeung, president and CEO of WowTV, owned by the Canadian Chinese Media Network, wrote in letters to the CRTC supporting the application. CCTV said in its application that it believes there is demand for CCTV News programming due to a large number of Chinese Canadians. The broadcaster said small broadcast distributors in Canada have been interested in carrying its services.
