Astral launches TMN Go video app

Astral Media Inc. launched a new iOS mobile application with content from channels The Movie Network, HBO Canada and TMN Encore, the company said. In a release Wednesday, Astral said the mobile app, called TMN Go, will offer more than 1,500 hours of content from those channels at no additional charge to customers who subscribe to them through TV packages. It said the app offers “more than 1,200 titles comprised of Hollywood hit movies, exclusive series from HBO, CIMEMAX and Showtime, and classics from every era.” Astral said the application is available to customers in Eastern Canada who subscribe to TMN, HBO Canada and TMN Encore through broadcast distributors BCE Inc. and Cogeco Cable Inc. It said Rogers Communications Inc. is expected to launch the service “in the coming weeks,” followed by other broadcast distributors “shortly thereafter.” The application is available for newer Apple Inc. devices, the release said. The company said it plans to develop similar apps for Android and Xbox. In Western Canada, Shaw Communications Inc. offers a mobile app for Apple devices called Movie Central, which offers HBO Canada and Movie Central for the company's TV subscribers. At a September CRTC hearing to consider Bell’s proposed $3.36-billion acquisition of Astral, George Cope, Bell’s president and CEO, said Bell would launch an online streaming service for Canadian consumers that is similar to the over-the-top service offered by Netflix Inc. if the deal was approved. The CRTC rejected that deal in October and the companies filed a reworked application in November to complete the acquisition. AOL Inc. also said Wednesday that it launched a new “premium curated video platform” in Canada called “AOL On.”
