The CRTC approved an application by Newfoundland Capital Corp. Ltd. subsidiary Newcap Inc. to operate a commercial English-language FM station in Wainwright, Alta., the commission said. In a decision Tuesday, the CRTC said it approved Newcap’s request to open a new FM station to replace its CKKY Wainwright AM station. The commission noted Newcap said it would maintain CKKY’s country music format and continue to target listeners between the ages of 35 and 54. As part of its decision, the commission said it also approved a related Newcap request to reduce the power of CKWY-FM to reduce overlap between its Wainwright market stations and Lloydminster, Alta., stations. The licence term for CKKY-FM expires on Aug. 31, 2019, the CRTC said.
