Industry Minister Christian Paradis will make an “important announcement” about Canada’s wireless sector Tuesday morning, Industry Canada said in a media advisory. The announcement will take place at 8 a.m. at Industry Canada’s offices in Ottawa with a question and answer period to follow, said the advisory, issued Monday evening. Treasury Board President Tony Clement alluded to a coming announcement in comments Monday. “There will be policies from our Conservative government to emphasize competition in this industry. It's important to have more choice. It's for this reason that Minister Paradis supported, with our policies, more new entrants and more choice for our contracts,” Clement, former industry minister, said to reporters on Parliament Hill after speaking in the House on the CRTC’s wireless code of conduct. Analysts have speculated that Industry Canada may delay its auction process for 700 MHz spectrum, for which the deadline for applications is June 11. The department is also considering new, unreleased spectrum transfer rules as consolidation talks among companies are ongoing.
