Sprint and Best Buy are offering students in the U.S. free talk, text and data service for a year with the purchase of a smartphone. In an joint announcement Monday, the companies said students who buy a smartphone from Sprint at a Best Buy store would get 12 months of unlimited talk, text and one gigabyte of data each month. The announcement said this represents value of $70 US per month, and that unlimited data is available for $10 US a month. Students are also not obligated to sign up for a two-year plan under this offer. The customer has to purchase the phone at the student-activated prices, which range from about $250 US to $900 US, according to an advertisement on Best Buy’s website. They are also subject to a $36 US activation fee and other charges. As well, customers must prove they are a student on a verification website hosted by Sprint within 14 days of activating their phones.
