BlackBerry Ltd. has denied a report it has held talks with Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. about an acquisition. “BlackBerry has not engaged in discussions with Samsung with respect to any possible offer to purchase BlackBerry,” the company said in a press release Wednesday. “BlackBerry's policy is not to comment on rumours or speculation, and accordingly it does not intend to comment further.” The statement came after Reuters reported that Samsung has discussed with BlackBerry a potential deal that would see Samsung buying BlackBerry for as much as $7.5 billion US. The article said gaining access to BlackBerry's patent portfolio was among the main motivations for Samsung's interest. According to the story, which cited a person familiar with the matter and documents, officials from the two companies met as recently as last week. Samsung also denied it has been in talks to acquire BlackBerry, Reuters reported later Wednesday.
