A Gatineau, Que., radio station on Tuesday was granted a seven-year licence renewal but was not relieved of the requirement that jazz and blues make up least 20 per cent of its musical programming. The CRTC said in an online notice that RNC Media Inc. had requested relief from this condition of its licence for CHLX-FM, arguing that this type of music attracts older listeners than its other programming, and this makes it hard to sell advertisements. The station asked for permission to go completely music adult contemporary in its musical selections, the CRTC said. The commission said that the station was found to be in non-compliance of its requirement for jazz and blues music during the week of Oct. 20 to 26, 2013, playing 18.4 per cent from this category instead of the required 20 per cent. The CRTC said its "general practice is to deny an application for licence amendment when it is directly linked to an instance of non-compliance." Last week, the CRTC denied requests for changes in musical formats from two Alberta radio stations that had been found to be in non-compliance.
