Stingray hires Rick Bergan to head U.S. distribution

Stingray Digital Group Inc. is expanding its management team with the appointment of a head of content distribution in the United States. Rick Bergan, who previously held the senior vice-president of distribution position at Music Choice, a Stingray competitor that filed a patent suit against the company in June, has been appointed to the newly-created position at the Montreal-based music distribution company, according to a Tuesday press release. He was most recently executive vice-president of business development and sales at Comcast Corp.'s OneTwoSee, which makes apps and products allowing sports networks, teams and other companies boost fan engagement. He will be responsible for sales development and “strategic relationships with sales agents and TV operators in the United States,” working with Brian Decker, senior vice-president of U.S. sales in Los Angeles. “Both Brian and Rick’s considerable experience will be invaluable to support Stingray’s aggressive expansion in the U.S. market and drive its content offering on TV, web, and mobile platforms,” the release said. Bergan, who has a BA in Communications from Villanova University and an MA in Public Communication from American University, has more than 20 years of experience in the cable television, digital media and music industries, the release noted. He will join the company on August 15, 2016 and be based on the East Coast, it said. Stingray has been on a buying spree as of late, nabbing in-store audio technology company Numedia for $2 million in February, acquiring the Festival 4K TV channel in June, and most recently in June, expanding its portfolio by purchasing BCE Inc.’s suite of music channels, including MuchLoud, MuchRetro, MuchVice and Juicebox. Last month, it also announced that its mobile streaming app, launched in July 2015, had doubled its user base in just a year to reach one million downloads.
