Bell providing customers energy management through IoT

Business customers of BCE Inc.’s network will be able to use an energy management tool from Twenty First Century Utilities LLC’s GridPoint, after the two companies agreed to a partnership on Tuesday. “Using cloud-based software and an intelligent mobile app, GridPoint offers real-time visibility, monitoring and control of energy usage across multiple sites, so you can use only the energy you require, when it’s needed,” Bell said on its website, touting the service as a Bell Internet of Things (IoT) exclusive. “Energy management is a core pillar within IoT, and enabling GridPoint’s technology through Bell’s network to its customer base delivers Canada’s best end-to-end service,” Evan Conley, director of strategic partnerships at United States-based GridPoint, said in a Tuesday press release. Nauby Jacob, vice-president of products and services at Bell Mobility, noted in the release that energy costs and environmental management “are significant expenses for businesses of all kinds.” The technology can be integrated into existing building management systems, he added. GridPoint said in the release that its technology will provide data-driven insights into “equipment health and performance so that customers can automate the control of HVAC and lighting schedules, and troubleshoot equipment issues remotely.” Last month, Bell partnered with a Hyundai Motor Group subsidiary to deliver its connected car telematics, including security, safety, diagnostics and infotainment for its vehicles. Rogers Communications Inc. followed with a connected car device that allows owners to monitor their vehicle’s maintenance and safety through their smartphones. The Wire Report previously reported on the benefits for telecoms of artificial intelligence to manage things like electrical systems. However, a Juniper Research report from April warns that malicious software known as ransomware is expected to increase with the proliferation of IoT.
