The province of Manitoba and a section of southwest Ontario will be getting an additional area code to combat numbering fatigue, the CRTC announced in a Thursday release. In Ontario, the Canadian Numbering Administrator (CNA) found that the 226, 519, and 548 area code was scheduled to exhaust by July 2024, although a further study pushed that date back one month to August. The 382 area code will be an overlay on the existing codes. The implementation date is June 17, 2023. The commission defended the early adoption of a new code by pointing out that telecom carriers are unlikely to initiate changes in the fall of 2023 as that would interfere with back-to-school activations and end-of-year promotions. Summer vacation schedules make adoption in July and August problematic. In Manitoba the 204 and 431 codes were originally projected to exhaust in June 2024 although the CNA later determined that exhaust would occur in Oct. 2023. The overlay will be with the 584 code. The implementation date is set for Oct. 29, 2022. The regulator did not cite carrier problems as it did with the Ontario decision. The moves follow on the heels of area code relief measures in Ontario, Montreal and western Quebec.
