Corus dropping multiple kids’ channels come September

Corus Entertainment Inc. is dropping from its lineup several of its children’s TV channels. The broadcaster says it will stop distributing the ABC Spark, Nickelodeon, Disney French (La Chaine Disney), Disney XD and Disney Jr. channels as of Sept. 1, 2025. Disney Channel will continue to be part of its linear and streaming portfolio. A Corus spokesperson confirmed in an emailed statement to The Wire Report Friday, July 11 that it is dropping some of its kids’ channels following a “comprehensive review.” The news was first reported by Cartt. “Corus regularly reviews its portfolio of channels to ensure we are meeting the evolving needs of our audiences and distribution partners,” the spokesperson said in the email. In early June, Corus announced John Gossling would become a solo-CEO after former co-CEO Troy Reeb left the role. It said at the time that “in light of the evolving industry landscape as well as the actions taken to date to stabilize the capital and debt structure of the company, the board has decided to transition back to a single CEO structure.” The company reported its results for the third quarter of fiscal 2025 late last month, with revenue dropping by 10 per cent compared to the same quarter in 2024, while profit dropped by nine per cent. It is part of a string of quarter-by-quarter drops in revenue seen by the broadcaster this year. Total revenue for the most recent quarter ended May 31 was $297.8 million, down from $331.8 million. Television revenue was down 11 per cent to $274.5 million from nearly $308.2 million and radio revenue was $23.2 million, virtually unchanged from $23.6 million a year prior. TV advertising revenue saw the steepest drop in that segment, down 15 per cent to $150.9 million from $178.1 million. TV subscriber revenue dropped as well, down to $111 million from $116.9 million or five per cent year-over-year. Corus also recently appeared before a hearing of CRTC panelists studying market dynamics in the broadcasting sector to argue that Canadian programming services face structural disadvantages compared to vertically-integrated BDUs and foreign streamers. Corus accused broadcast distribution undertakings of using their market dominance to manipulate carriage and packaging in ways that hurt independent services. Corus also supported maintaining the CRTC’s undue preference and standstill rules, which have been at the centre of a dispute over channel placements and repackaging between it and Rogers. hdaley@thewirereport.ca, with files from The Wire Report’s archives
