Corus revenues down as employee stabilization continues

Corus Entertainment Inc. released its fourth quarter and fiscal year numbers on Thursday, Oct. 30. Once again the troubled broadcaster saw a decline in revenues across the board. Profits fell for television but were up for radio. Total revenues for the quarter were $232 million, a 14 per cent drop from the previous year’s $269 million. For the fiscal year, revenues were $1.12 billion, a decline of 11 per cent from 2024’s $1.27 billion. Television revenue was $213 million for Q4, a decrease of 14 per cent from 2024’s $248 million. For FY 2025, revenues were $1.04 billion, a fall of 11 per cent from the $1.17 billion a year prior. Radio revenues for the quarter were $19.2 million, a 10 per cent decline from $21.3 million a year ago. For the entire year, revenues in radio were $84.6 million, another 10 per cent drop from 2024’s $93.8 million. Profits for the quarter fell 39 per cent to $25.9 million from $42.3 million a year earlier. For the fiscal year, profits declined 33 per cent to $189 million from $283 million in 2024. Television profits for the quarter were $30.1 million, from $45.7 million, for a decrease of 34 per cent. For the year, profits in TV were $201 million, a decline of 32 per cent from 2024’s $294 million. Radio was a bright spot in the annual report. For the quarter, profits were up 85 per cent, to $2.59 million from 2024’s $1.4 million. For the entire fiscal year, profits were $12.9 million, up from $9.44 million a year earlier, an increase of 37 per cent. The company cited the “impact of cost containment measures” as the reason for the increase. Corus CEO John Gossling emphasized the importance of the company’s streaming service Stack TV in drawing more viewers to its television content. “We know that demand for premium content is not abating but the way that the audience looks for, watches for, listens to content continues to shift,” he told an analysts’ call. “As part of our strategy to provide Canadians more ways to connect with the premium content they love we’ve been working to grow our digital suite of products.” Gossling pointed to layoffs among Corus staff as a way of stanching the hemorrhaging on the bottom line. There have been job losses in both television and radio in recent months. Global TV is in the process of preparing for its licence renewal hearings before the CRTC in the next fiscal year.
