Bell lays off almost 700 non-unionized employees

BCE Inc. is laying off approximately 690 employees, the company confirmed Thursday, Nov. 20. According to Bell director of communications Ellen Murphy, the layoffs are part of the company’s three-year strategic plan outlined during its investor day presentation. That plan includes goals to make two to four per cent in compound revenue growth annually, find cost savings of $1.5 billion, and pay $5 billion in dividends to common shareholders. “To advance this plan, we regularly assess and make changes to our team structure,” Murphy told The Wire Report in an email. “As a result, we made the difficult but necessary decision to reduce the number of non-unionized management positions across the company to better align our team structure with our growth plan.” “We know this is difficult for those who are impacted and we are supporting each person affected,” said Murphy. She explained that about 650 workers with manager positions are being cut from Bell, making up under two per cent of its workforce. Bell Media, the company’s media and entertainment subsidiary, is cutting about 40 jobs, “predominantly in corporate departments;” that group makes up “less than one per cent” of its team, Murphy noted. This round of layoffs is the latest in a series of job cuts at Bell over recent years, adding up to thousands of reductions nationwide. Earlier this year, the company offered voluntary severance packages to 1,200 unionized employees, citing “unprecedented challenges” in Canada’s telecom industry. Bell also slashed 1,300 jobs in June 2023; 4,800 jobs in February 2024; 50 Bell Media jobs in June 2024; and 120 jobs at its fibre construction subsidiary Expertech in October 2024. Net earnings for Bell in its latest quarter were $4.55 billion, versus a loss of $1.19 billion posted a year prior. That earlier loss in Q3 2024, however, was blamed on a $2.1 billion non-cash impairment charge related to its Bell Media TV and radio properties. It reported adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) of $2.72 billion at the time. That number increased by 1.5 per cent to $2.76 billion in the latest quarter. Bell’s most recent operating revenues were also up, hitting $6.04 billion — an increase of 1.3 per cent from $5.97 billion the previous year. phalentm@thewirereport.ca
